In Inabayama there was a legend of the piskie, a small maiden who emerged from the sea, or was found in the quiet places among the mountains. She would sit on rocks and brush her hair, or sometimes she would sing. To see one was considered both a great honour and a great tragedy for sorrow would often follow in their wake. The children of the kingdom would skip to the rhythm of a counting game created by the ancients when the Piskies walked more freely through the kingdom.
Ronan Amara was to see two in his lifetime.

Excerpt:
Inabayama was slowly creeping away from him. Ronan was leaving everything he knew behind—his parents, his home, his sister. He was taking her husband, her duty, her life. Veren had come with them as a court representative with Max, his guardian, but he was still very young and Max had already put him to bed. Felan had spent the best part of the journey flirting with Max It just seemed to vex her. She didn't react other than gritting her teeth a little tighter. He wasn't even sure that Felan noticed, but everyone else on the ship did.
"Cheer up, kiddo." Felan said. "It's a brave new world out there and it's not so bad to leave home." He spread his arm to show the open expanse of sea in the direction of Eressea. "The weather's nicer for one."
"Hn," Ronan vocalised, wanting to acknowledge him but not sure what to say. Ronan had the impression that if he did speak, he'd burst out crying. He didn't want to leave Inabayama. He didn't want to leave the towers or the beach or his home. He didn't want to leave his parents to marry a man he knew nothing about. He didn't want to live his sister's life for her. He wanted her to live her own life and to live his life in her shadow. Mieran was the brave one. Mieran was first born. She was the first one to speak. She was the heir, not him. She would have known what to do.
But Mieran was sick, possibly dying and there was nothing that Ronan could do, so instead he was taking her place.
